Jarenlang stond de school midden in een hechte, joodse middenklassebuurt. In de jaren tachtig was het gebied drastisch veranderd en de achteruitgang werd weerspiegeld in de academische prestaties van de school en het toegenomen geweld. In een poging om academici te verbeteren, werd de school in 1994 gereorganiseerd in vier kleinere scholen, elk met een andere specialiteit. In 2003 werd Erasmus Hall High School ingehuldigd als een nieuwe Science, Technology and Research High School (STAR).
